Jacques Anatole Thibault
(Francois-Anatole Thibault), popularly known by the pen-name Anatole France
was the son of a book seller. He immensely loved books, spent his time
in the book shop and was a bibliophile. After graduation, he helped
his father in managing the book shop. He was also appointed as the
librarian of the French Senate in 1876.
France started his literary career as
a poet and journalist. His first poem was published in 1869. He,
however, shot to fame with his novel
Le Crime de Sylvestre Bonnard--
The Crime of Sylvestre Bonnard in
1881. The novel won him a prize from French Academy.
His books deal with varied
themes, such as satire on human nature and continued patronage of
political and ideological fanaticism. Many of his books were best
sellers. France was also a member of Academie francaise.
Landmark:
On 31 May 1922, France's entire works were put on the Index
Librorum Prohibitorum (Prohibited
Books Index)
of the Roman
Catholic Church. He
regarded this as a "distinction". This Index was abolished in 1966.
His detractors described him as a vulgar writer, a charge which noted
British writer George Orwell refuted.* France's relations with women
were always turbulent.
