Singer was a Polish- born Jewish American Author who was a novelist,
short story writer and essayist. When he was 6 years old, the family
moved to Yiddish speaking poor Jewish quarters of Warshaw. His
childhood was pretty uneventful. In 1921, he got himself admitted to
Tachkemoni Rabbinical Seminary but neither the school nor any
profession suited him and he considered himself as a failure. In the
1930s, the Nazi threat increased and Singer emigrated to USA in 1935
to safety. His life in USA in the initial periods was equally
lackluster. Only after his marriage in 1940, he returned to prolific
writing.
Singer published at least 18 novels, 14 children's books and several
memoirs. Most of the writing was in Yiddish. Many of his works were
translated by Saul Bellow and his brother.
INFLUENCE: Antony Chekov, Maupassaunt . From Maupassant, he
learned the finely grained sense of drama. From Chekov, he developed
the technique of developing characters of enormous complexity in very
brief space.
LANDMARK:

Prior to winning the Nobel Prize, translations of dozens of his
stories were frequently published in popular magazines such as
Playboy and Esquire,
which attempted to raise their literary reputation by publishing
