Ivan Andric ( Ivan later was
constricted to Ivo ) was born to Bosnian Croat parents who were poor.
Andric lost his father at the age of two and was brought up by
maternal uncles. He spent his formative years in the town of Visegrad
on the banks of Drina river. The river and the 16th Century Sokolovic
bridge later formed the backdrop of his now famous novel, The
Bridge on the Drina.
After
school, he studied Philosophy and also started his literary career as
a poet. During First World War, Austrian Government imprisoned him for
his political views and activities. Later on, he became a civil
servant. As Govt. delegate, he attended 19th,21st,23rd and 24th
sessions of League of Nations during 1930-34.

house in Dolac, near Travnik has been transformed into a museum and
also his Belgrade flat

Serbian sources claim him as a Serbian writer as he mainly wrote in
the ekavian standard that exists only in the Serbian language. He
declared himself a Serb when he married Serbian Milica Babić at the
age of 67
