Gabriel
José de la Concordia García Márquez, fondly known as Gabo, was born
on 6th March, 1927 in Aracataca, Colombia which is a small mountainous
country on North Western side of South America.Soon after his birth,
his father got a job of pharmacist and moved out along with Gabriel's
mother leaving the child in the hands of his grandfather. Gabriel's
grand father was a political liberal and the young Marquez mostly
imbibed his liberal political views and outlook towards life from his
grandfather. Garcia's grandmother was an unique storyteller and she
had her own slice of influence on Garcia. Three decades later, his
grandmother's influence was perceptible in One hundred years' of
Solitude.
Marquez started his career as a journalist and soon
matured as a novelist, short-story writer, screenwriter. He started a
literary style known as Magic Realism which was later adopted by many
prominent writers. He is considered as one of the most influential
writers of 20th Century. In 1982, he got Nobel Prize for Literature.
It is said that G.K. Chesterton, Fyodor
Dostoyevsky, William Faulkner, Juan Rulfo were some of the writers who
profoundly influenced Marquez.
