Chloe Anthony Wofford, known as Toni Morrison is
an acclaimed writer whose themes hover around black women and
African-American social milieu. But her tone is not overtly feminist.
She was born in a working class family and
was 2nd among four children. She became a catholic at the age of
12.After school, she did her graduation in English from Howard
University in 1953 and Master Degree from Cornell University in the
same subject.
After studies, she took up teaching
assignments in Texas Southern University and Howard University. She
married in 1958. The marriage did not last long and ended in divorce
in 1964. Then, she moved to Syracuse, New York and worked as Editor of
Random House, a publishing company and also taught in Yale University
& Bard college.
Her writing activity started while studying in
Howard when her first novel The Bluest Eye was published. This
was followed by her second novel Sula which was nominated for
National Book Award. Her third novel, Song of Solomon brought
her to limelight. In 1987, her novel The Beloved was published
and became an instant hit. After that, she has not looked back.
